How to Type Furigana for Japanese Kanji in Word
Up until just recently, I figured out how to type furigana using Word’s Phonetic Guide, and JRPG Japanese: A Language Learning Adventure! never looked so clean…! (* ̄▽ ̄*)ブ I’m so glad I was able to find a way to make my book readable for Japanese learners of all levels. This way, I don’t have to type all phrases twice, once with kanji, and once with only katakana/hiragana… That would’ve been ugly. I figure, hey, if it took this long for me to figure out, maybe some of you heroes out there could use a quick Microsoft Word tutorial, too. The Step-by-Step Highlight the kanji you’d like to add furigana to. Under…

Learning Teachable Japanese Grammar
Has this ever happened to you, dear heroes and Japanese language learners? Scenario #1: You’re in middle of conversation in a second language when an unfamiliar/familiar(?) Japanese word pops into your head. You don’t know if it’s right or wrong, but you decide to use it anyway. You’re either totally correct, almost there, or completely off. But that’s fine! Chances are, even if you WERE completely off, you might have been searching for a word that’s similar-sounding anyway! In other words, you’ve HEARD that word somewhere before, but maybe you just don’t know how to use it. Scenario #2: You’re texting a friend in Japanese. You’re constructing all the right…

JRPG Japanese: Planning the Story’s Main Flow
You can’t write a book without a bit of planning first. If I didn’t have the main flow of JRPG Japanese: A Language Learning Adventure! figured out, writing the actual book felt impossible from the get-go, with all the random ideas just floating around on .txts, .docxs, and notepad scraps around my desk… Being a textbook, JRPG Japanese’s main goal is teaching Japanese. However! Considering my lesson ideas all revolve around your standard JRPG dialogues and scenarios, I couldn’t NOT write a plot! Writing the story’s sequence came in two main stages for me as I tried grasping the 8-bit RPG plot. 1. Making a list of dungeons The first…

JRPG Japanese Characters: Ken!
Greetings, heroes! I am sooooo excited for this progress update, because today is the day! The day I introduce you to JRPG Japanese: A Language Learning Adventure!’s lead character, Ken! JRPG Japanese: A new character appears! These past few weeks, I’ve been working on characters’ design drafts with my illustrator, shugulupsketches. Ken’s design His design was inspired by many of my favorite game protags. We were inspired by the rugged, peasant look that Rudy from Wild Arms and Jet…

7 Very Helpful Apps for Japanese Language Learning
1. JED for Android JED is my first go-to as a Japanese/English dictionary, and honestly, I don’t know where I’d be without it. While it barely takes up any space on my phone (about 5MB), it is also offline, meaning it doesn’t need any internet access for use (other than updates) and its lookup speed is super quick. Which already makes it top Weblio in my book. Another feature that really makes this app stand out, in my opinion, is its ever-convenient tag feature, which lets me create decks of vocabulary words that I save and look up for later reference. I’ve got decks for JLPT, for questions I plan…
